Aim of Mississippi River Explorers

The Aim of the Mississippi River Explorer program is to introduce, learn about, do activities and projects related to the Mississippi River and its environs.  The program is geared to Middle School students involved in an after school, summer school, or similar type of educational program.

Goals of Mississippi River Explorers

  • Learn about and experience the History, Geography, and related information of the Mississippi River.  Where did all this water come from??
  • Learn about and experience the fish, birds and wildlife of the Mississippi River Environs.  Fish and Birds and Animals, oh my!
  • Learn about and experience local watersheds.  What are these things?
  • Learn about and experience recreation related to the Mississippi River.  Fun on the River!

2024-2025 Monthly Modules (Field Trip)

March: Eagles (Rock Island Arsenal)

April: Terracycling and Waste Prevention (Terracycle)

May: Litter and Plastic Pollution (Waste Commission of Scott County) +Student Booth at Farmer’s Market Earth Day Celebration

June: River Stewardship (Living Lands & Waters, Nahant Marsh)

July: Biodiversity (Mississippi River Museum)

August: No modules or field trip

September: Recreation and Fishing (West Lake County Park)

October: Seasons on the River (Nahant Marsh)

November: Geography of Mississippi River (TBD)

December: No modules or field trip

January: Winter on the River (Nahant Marsh)

February: Eagles (Sunset Park)

March: Flooding (Campbell’s Island, River Action)

April: Spring on the River (Nahant Marsh)

Summer 2025: Fully incorporate 3-year curriculum for conservation education and action
